One Theme a Day – The Best Way to Survive Quarantine with Kids

“Mom, what are we going to learn today”?

How amazing will it be to hear that from your child instead of “I’m bored” “I’m hungry” or “I want my screen time.”

Let’s be honest. For most of us, quarantine is starting to wear a bit thin. What began as an exciting novelty is becoming the new normal for not only us but our children too. And being quarantined with kids is tough.

Almost overnight, we all had the task of homeschooling our kids dropped into our laps. While many colleges and high schools have gone online, most of our younger kids only have packets of math problems and spelling drills to occupy them.

Keeping any kid-focused on learning at the moment seems like an impossible task!

But, believe it or not, homeschooling your kids can be easier than you think. All you need to do is stick to a proven solid method, that won’t drive you insane but will get your kids driven to find out, what are we going to learn today?

Why Homeschooling Will Make your Kids Smarter

First thing first, let’s induce ourselves with a shot of motivation and see how homeschooling, even if for a short period, can benefit our kids. Homeschooling is not new to the two million children who currently learn from home in the United States. For many parents, homeschooling is not a quarantine-induced necessity, but a choice.

But why do these Moms and Dads choose to keep their kids at home?

Research shows that homeschooled children score significantly better than their conventionally schooled peers. Even many state departments of education report that children who learn at home are consistently in the highest percentiles of standardized test-takers.

Homeschooled children have the freedom to learn at their own pace. After all, there’s no way to coast by when you are the only student!

But the benefits of homeschooling are not just academic.

Homeschooled kids also gain several surprising social benefits from this form of education. Discovering the world alongside your child will deepen your family relationship in a way that’s just not possible in traditional education. The freedom to build your own schedule will also help to maximize the precious time you have with your kids.

Children who learn at home can develop at their own pace and in their own ways. They have more time just to be kids!

A study of over 7,300 former homeschoolers showed there is no real difference in the long-term social success of homeschoolers and non-homeschoolers. Both groups became well-adjusted adults who contributed to society. In short, traditional school is not the only place to get proper socialization!

So, maybe homeschooling isn’t so scary!

But there are 101 ways to homeschooling your kids, and since it is, after all,  forced homeschooling for most of us, we have some shortcut for you. We researched and practiced the way smart homeschooling moms are using – and here it is-  one theme per day.

One Theme Per Day – The Easiest and Efficient way to Homeschooling your kids in quarantine

Planning out a whole curriculum for your kids can be hard. After all, there’s a reason why teachers go through so much training!

But there is a secret to planning amazing homeschool sessions that will keep your kids excited to learn, even when in social isolation.

That secret is: One Theme Per Day.

Each day you pick a theme and incorporate it into the entire day. A new subject to handling every day keeps your child curious and anticipating. You can use your theme to work on your child soft spots- weather it’s math, English, or even social difficulties he/she might have.

And believe it or not, it will be easier for you to keep your kids learning and enjoying themselves that way since you have a fixed schedule. Don’t be alarmed – fixed schedule doesn’t mean you can’t stray from it, it only gives you a general outline to work with. In other words – you don’t need to reinvent the wheel day after day; the frame stays the same – what changes is the content.

After playing with the “one theme a day” method, we found a schedule that works best for us:

The Story:

Start the day with a story about a personality that has something to do with today’s topic. We highly recommend getting equipped with one of these books or a similar one from that genre:

These books have a compilation of multiple famous and not-so-famous personalities, the stories are written for kids, and they have beautiful illustrations that kids love. The theme of the day is stars? Learn about Galileo Galilei. Painting? Learn about Frieda Kahlo. That way, your kids also learn about important people in history and get a prompt for the day.

The Activities:

There are a lot of things you can do at home with your kids – drawing, crafting, play-doh, baking, cooking, etc. But getting kids motivated about an activity isn’t always easy. With the one theme a day, kids turned out a lot more engaged in different activities. And the possibilities are endless! With the right supplies and preparation, almost anything can be made into a fun learning activity.

For this method work smoothly and without dwelling on what you can do next, we do recommend purchasing in advance some necessary supplies that are most common in kids’ crafts.

If you have kids of different ages, it’s also easy to adjust your plan according to age. Older kids can watch documentaries, research their own stories, or learn new words linked to the theme. Younger kids will love making crafts, reading stories, and playing games that fit the theme.

It won’t just be fun for your quarantined kids – these activities are also fun for us adults stuck at hom
